Knights of Columbus: St. Anthony of Padua Council June 2011 Newsletter
Greetings fellow Knights: Best wishes to you and your loved ones. As most of you know this will be my last newsletter. As I have previously stated, I will be stepping down from the position of Grand Knight as of this Junes election. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve all of you for the past four years. My congratulations and best wishes go out to the new Grand Knight who will be elected at our June meeting. I would like to take this time to sincerely thank those Brothers and their significant others who have so graciously offered their assistance to our council during various functions and activities. Without your help we would not have been successful in our endeavors. I hope you will continue to support the incoming Grand Knight as well. Things discussed at our last meeting: The majority of the meeting was spent nominating a slate of officers for election at our June meeting. (VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU ATTEND SO THAT YOU CAN VOTE FOR THE OFFICER OF YOUR CHOICE). They are as follows: Grand Knight: Juan Anaya, Will Burdick, Stan Hannah and Mike McNee. Deputy Grand Knight: Don Henry, Jim Pitten and Victor Virgen. Chancellor: Juan Anaya. Recorder: Russell Dennis, Stan Hannah and Harold Laubenthal. Treasurer: Will Burdick and Don Henry. Advocate: Don Henry and Rudolfo Ramirez. Warden: Brian Byrnes and Eric Olesen. Inside Guard: Carn Lopez and Carlos Quezada. Outside Guard: Max Munoz and Jim Wojcik. Congratulations to all our nominees! We also discussed our proposal of erecting a flag pole in front of the Church. Hopefully this will be taken care of before our next meeting. In regards to my proposal of establishing a Flyer of Brothers available to offer their services to members of our Parish, I have received no responses, so I will assume that no one is interested in continuing with this proposal. Last month’s name drawn for our 50/50 drawing was Ed Sibiga. He was not present, so the pot still grows!

Fellow Parishioners, On behalf of the St. Anthony of Padua Council 9838 of the Knights of Columbus, I would like to extend our gratitude for your support and attendance at our various functions throughout the year. By your attending our Pancake Breakfasts and Theme Dinners you have allowed us to support a variety of charitable organizations within our community and our own Parish as well as the Catholic community as a whole. It has also given us the opportunity to award two $500.00 scholarships, one to Janesta Dennis and one to Esteban Lopez. I would like to end by saying that your support also enabled us to construct our Tribute to the Blessed Virgin and our Memorial to the Unborn, with special thanks to the anonymous donor who contributed $1,000.00 and also to St. Anthony’s Women’s Guild for their generous donation of $300.00 towards our efforts. May God bless you all and your loved ones and once again thank you for your prayers and generosity throughout the year. Jim Pitten Grand Knight

Congratulations also to Dan Rinker who was recently elected to the position of “ Faithful Navigator” of the San Juan Diego Assembly #2836 of the Knights of Columbus. When a man becomes a member of the Knights of Columbus he is first initiated as a 1st Degree. He may then continue thru the progression, becoming a 2nd, 3rd and finally a 4th Degree Knight. One of the main functions of our 3rd Degree Council is financing young men in the Seminary. Noticeable to everyone is their deep dedication to the unborn as is visible by the Memorial they erected this past year. Our Youth Group can’t thank them enough for the support which they provide to them. They assist me and all Catholic priests. I am especially grateful to our local Knights who take turns driving me to Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission for the Saturday evening Mass as well as otherservices they provide for me and the Parish. The 4th Degree Knights pride themselves in their service to the communities in the form of patriotism such as assisting firefighters, police and community functions. The Color Core, noticeably the men dressed in colorful uniforms, accompany the Bishop during public outings: this was apparent at our recent Confirmation and 1st Eucharist. I am a member of the local 3rd Degree Council as their Chaplain, and the Friar of the San Juan Diego Assembly. Dan will assume this highest position of the assembly following fellow Parishioner Dennis Russell.

MEMORIAL TO THE UNBORN This project began about 10 years ago when Fr. John Vogt purchased the Castro property to be used as a parish parking lot. Under the directions of Jim Girard and the help of parish members and the KofC the old house was torn down and we had a rough dirt parking lot. The Knights of Columbus wanting to do something for our parish, thought to put in an entrance/exit on to Tegner with a memorial stone next to the driveway. ADOT would not allow this. A while later we got Willie Hershkowitz of Lug & Tug Const. to donate his time, equipment and material to level the lot for parking, leaving a drop off of about 3 feet to the sidewalk. After the Knights saved a few more dollars from fundraisers, they put timbers and dirt in the 3 ft. drop off and made a small cactus garden. Another year or so passed by and we were able to have the lot paved, depleting our funds once again. The area became very difficult to maintain so Dolores Hershkowitz of Tug & Lug Construction donated equipment and men to remove the timbers and dirt so we could build the wall and eventually reach our goal of our Memorial. We now had the funds saved for the additional items, flooring, stone and statue. The stone was donated by Tracy from Wickenburg Funeral Home and the statue was purchased by us thru Images of Heaven, Reading, PA.
God Bless, and I thank you all for your input during the construction period of this project. Earl Temerowski Financial Secretary Knights of Columbus Council #9838 St .Anthony of Padua
